It’s always a thrill to meet famous people and to meet famous authors, for me, is exciting. On Saturday 21st May,  I had just such a pleasure, a chance to meet the fantastic Frank Cottrell Boyce at a local bookshop called Write Blend. Write Blend have been running a month-long book festival called Blend of Words with a number of fantastic events for writers.

From publishing to just plain old ‘How to get started…‘ they’ve had it all and I’ve been lucky enough to be able to attend a couple of them. The shop have also been kind enough to stock my new book, which I cannot thank them enough for.

Anyway, I digress. The end of the festival also celebrated the 1st birthday of this fabulous bookshop that works with local, aspiring authors. And what better way to celebrate than getting a big, local name in to celebrate.

Frank Cottrell Boyce has worked on a number of TV shows, from Brookside to Coronation Street and also wrote the Peter Capaldi Doctor Who episode ‘In The Forest Of The Night‘. He is most famous for the movie, Millions, directed by Danny Boyle and for the book of the same name, as well as writing two sequels in the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang series.

He read excerpts from three of his books, his new release:

  • Sputnik’s Guide to Life on Earth

As well as:

  • The Astounding Broccoli Boy, and
  • Cosmic.

It was wonderful to see a famous author in full flow, he held the children and adults in attendance spellbound as he energetically read excerpts and took questions. It was funny to see that a children’s author can still come unstuck by the randomness of a child’s question.

It was a pleasure to watch and to meet the man during his book signing later on in the afternoon. A lovely man who was extremely encouraging when I mentioned I was a new author and also encouraging to know that even he finds motivation to write difficult at times. “I know I should write,” he said, “but half the time I wander off and Hoover the carpet, anything that distracts me from having to start writing“. I’m sure fellow authors will understand that one, I know I’m guilty of that a lot!

A big thank you to Write Blend, to all the staff and helpers for a great festival and I’m hoping to become involved more with the next one. If you ever get a chance to meet an author, if you’re one yourself, then do. You’ll find they’re every bit as crazy as the rest of us (in a very lovely way of course!).
